Description of the tour Avignon, Pont du Gard & Arles
What to expect from the tour:
This tour is designed to provide you with detailed insight into history, culture and the natural beauty on offer here.
Starting with Avignon, it takes around an hour to reach it by motorway but on arrival, you will be met with an area that is easy to explore. On foot, you can head to the main square, known as Place de L’Horologe and you can discover the Palace of the Popes. It’s important to understand that history is prominent here with Avignon being the capital of Christianity during medieval times. The tour is designed to fit around the interests of participants but with a lot of history to explore, it’s easy to immerse yourself in everything that it has to offer. While it is possible to enter the Palace of the Popes, it takes around an hour and you will need to purchase a ticket. Once again, the history here is mesmerising and you will also see the famous Pont d’Avignon bridge and if you visit during July, you can experience the amazing Festival d’Avignon. Here you will see live performances, stalls and an atmosphere that will leave you amazed.
After leaving Avignon, we take a 30-minute drive to Pont du Gard where again, Roman history is clearly visible with the Roman aqueduct. It’s the tallest of all Roman aqueduct bridges and can be accessed with a short walk through a beautifully preserved area. There is an entrance fee to be paid.
Next, we make our way to the famous Arles which is 45-minutes away and is a Roman City but also famous for being the home of Vincent Van Gogh. It’s a serene town whereby the local culture will lure you in and you will be able to explore gorgeous buildings and architecture with ease.
However, it is difficult to avoid the impact that Van Gogh had on this area. He lived here in 1888 and here you will find Cafe Van Gogh and the Hotel-Dieu, all of which are famous landmarks that are connected to his time here. While visiting here, you can walk around the town, explore the Hotel de Ville, the Rhone River, the Roman Bath and the Amphiteatre. In general, we don’t visit the Roman sites although it is possible to view them from the outside while we pass through the city.
If you wish to stay together then this is possible although you can be given free time to explore the city however you wish. Alternatively, if you want to visit somewhere other than Arles, we can tour the city of Les-Baux de Provence although it can be added to the full tour as it’s possible to adapt it accordingly.
