Description of the tour Aix-en-Provence, Les Baux-de-Provence and Carrières des Lumières (lights show)
What to expect from the tour:
Enjoy a scenic private tour to the city of Aix-en-Provence, the village of Les Baux-de-Provence and the light show Carrières des Lumières, offered especially for cruise ship passengers.
We at Bonjour Provence Tours have specially prepared this tour for you.
From the Marseille cruise ship dock, we will first drive to Aix-en-Provence, a beautiful city north of Marseille with a population of about 140,000 people. We'll notice the statue of the well-known painter Paul Cézanne. Walking along the main street of Aix, named the Cour Mirabeau, we'll admire many magnificent architectural attractions, including ancient churches and mansions, as well as mesmerizing fountains and small cafés. After that we'll stop by the the Provençal market to savour the authentic and fresh local produce, as well as enjoy the ambiance of the south of France.
Northwest of Aix-en-Provence, after one hour of driving, we will reach Les Baux-de- Provence. Les Baux is one of the most beautiful villages in Provence. Only 22 people actually live in this rural community now. Traces of human occupation in the area date back to 6000 B.C.
In 1642, Les-Baux was granted to the Prince of Monaco. In present days, prince Jacques holds the title of Marquis of Baux.
This region is well-known for its production of olive oil and wine. Agriculture still plays an essential role in this area. The summit of Les Baux is at 310m and here you can enjoy exploring the ruins of the medieval fortified castle from the 11th Century (the purchase of a ticket is required). Medieval siege machines have been reconstructed on the grounds. There is a 16m high catapult and other machines which actually are in working condition. The surrounding limestone mountains are beautiful, sculpted by time, rain and wind.
Another exciting thing about this tour is the possibility to experience the Carrière de Lumière Art show. This art show takes place inside an old quarry. The works of famous artists like Monet, Gaugin, Renoir, Picasso and many others have been featured here. One enters the quarry to find oneself in another world, surrounded by paintings projected on all the walls, the ceiling and the floor, all this accompanied by classical music. The spectator becomes one with the art. The experience is nothing short of amazing! The ticket price of this show is not included in the total price and, if you wish to visit, you have to purchase your tickets on the spot. Usually, clients do not need to queue when buying their tickets, as we will facilitate the purchasing process.
If you do not wish to visit the art show, you can spend additional time wandering in the village of Les Baux, or sitting at an outdoor café and enjoying the panoramic view of the valley. You will be dropped off and then, later on, picked up at the entrance of the village, or you can use this available time to visit the castle, a visit which takes about 1 hour. This visit also requires the purchase of a ticket.
